Windows server 2012 hangs on splash screen after reboot

I have a new server and have just spent ages configuring it. The system installed shed loads of updates and requested a restart - now it just hangs at the windows splash screen. I have tried last known config but it still goes to the splash screen and hangs. What is the best way to try to recover from this?

Can you get into Safe Mode or does that hang too?
I had a machine do this recently and believe it or not it was the antivirus (AVG) - uninstalled and it booted fine.
Another possible culprit is apparently the graphics driver, so if you can get into safe mode and uninstalling the a/v doesn't fix it, try removing the graphics driver next.

AVG article confirming that their product can cause the machine to fail to boot: https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?l=en_US&urlname=Disabling-AVG-when-Windows-cannot-start
I have read that other a/v products can cause the same problem.

Thanks for you comment. In the end it was a bios hang - liaised with Dell and upgraded this. The updates then configured and the system ran a repair and then booted.
