Degraded Virtual Disk and Hot Spare question


I have a client with an older Dell R200 server that has 2 internal disks. It didn't have Openmanage on it until today, but now that we've installed it I see that it has a degraded virtual disk (array). It only has 1 of the 2 internal disks listed in the virtual disk, but both physical disks show up as healthy.

Physical Disk 0:0 is a part of the virtual disk and the state says "Online". Physical Disk 0:1 is not part of the Virtual Disk and the state says "Ready". The only available task for 0:1 is "Assign Global Hot Spare".

My theory is that a disk was replaced at one point, but the new disk never added itself to the array. At this point we have a few options. We could take a full server image backup of the server, rebuild the array manually, then restore the server image backup. This is a terminal server for a business that runs 7 days a week, so they would experience a lot of downtime. My other idea is to assign Physical Disk 0:1 as a Global Hot Spare and then see if it fills in to the Array like a hot spare should.

I'm unsure if the hot spare will work though. Does it matter that I'm adding a hot spare after already losing a drive? What are the potential consequences of adding this hot spare? Is there a chance it could destroy the existing array?

This is the correct course of action. In a Ready state, adding it as a hot-spare is your ONLY option to restore the array to an optimal state.

Thanks, that's what I was leaning towards. Is this normal procedure for replacing a disk? I'm wondering why the disk didn't just add itself into the RAID 1 automatically when it was replaced. Could it just be the way the PERC works?

There are several reasons a disk may not rebuild automatically (existing meta-data, drive firmware, controller firmware, drive type, etc.), so it's never enough to simply insert a replacement and forget it. You can check the progress/status in OMSA, and if it doesn't rebuild automatically, then it must be done manually.
