vmkping at the console. (remotely via ssh).

and you can then specify which VMKernel Portgroup to send the packets through.

so how do you do this ?

you ssh into one of the hosts and they you SHOULD be able to vmkping all of the vmkenal ports gorups on the other host ?

i think that is it right?

thanks !!!!!!!!

Yes, exactly that.

use the IP Addresses associated with the VMkernel portgroups.

is there anyway to do like a tracert , I suspect that I am getting a ping reply but there may be an Ip conflict , can I get the mac addy with a vmk command ?

do you get a vmkping reponse ?

how have you defined your vmotion network ? it should be on it's own network and IP Address range ?

no tracert or MAC Address. But all VMKernel Portgroups are unique MAC Addresses ?

please upload screenshots of your networking

yeah I get a responce from vmkping for all of then , however I suspect that it is not what I think it is and that some other device is responding to the vmkping

I will check the MAC addys to make sure they are unique

that's one host!

cannot tell if the the other host is on the right network, or setup correctly.

what IP Address are you using for Management and vMotion ?

hi , I have the second server in the cluster esx2 configs over at my other post

http://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/28698129/Question-about-VMK-kernel-ports-and-network-isolation.html

interesting if I run the vmotion network over the managment vmk it works fine , I unchecked the box for vmotion on the vmotion network and had it run over the same vmk that the managment networks runs on

so next I will remove and recreate the vmk port for vmotion and assign the same ip addresses that exist now , i will retry vmotion

if that does not work i will find a new range of ip ( not used for anything else) like for example 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2 leaving the gateways as is

and then test vmotion

sound like a good plan????/

thanks!!!

Yes, good plan.

I would always recommend a seperate network address range for vMotion. This is best practice, that vMotion traffic is isolated from other traffic.

the eventual problem was found  in that one for network interfaces ( iSCSI ) was set to carry the vmotion traffic as well . this was found in the HOSTd log I think !!
