Question about VMK kernel ports and network isolation

Question about VMK  kernel ports and network  isolation

Is it acceptable to just make up any old address and assign it to 2 vmkernals on each host running for vmotion  like can this be 10.1.1.2 on one host and 10.1.1.3 on the other host and then make  make the gateways all zeros and let it be an “isolated network”

Yes, completely acceptable, use any private address range.

Do not use the same IP Address range as Management Network.

Idealling seperate physical networks, or VLANs, but if you cannot do that...

as got gateway, just put 10.1.1.1 in the box, if it does not exist it does not matter!

different IP networks, will do.

it seems as if you  change the gateway to  10.0.0.1 you are disconnected from the host , I had to DRAC into it and set the gateway back , I wonder if i did this wrong?

thanks

leave the default gateway as for vMotion VMKernel Portgroup. (e.g. do not edit).

and then change the vMotion IP Addresses t0 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2

can you then ping and vmkping them

you can only set 1 default gateway which should set for your management vmkernel

as Andrew above mentioned, other vmkernel doesn't require gateway since they are connected directly

esxcli network ip route show route

you can see the route with the vmkernel that is direct.
