SAP and Exchange email attachments

Hi,
We are building company and our ERP system is SAP.
Our SAP server sends emails to multiple external users to relay through Exchange 2010 server, with large attachments each attachment can be up to 25 MB. We send at least 100 emails per day and each email is send to multiple users.
Because of this now we have issue with Exchange, the queue gets too big as one email of these emails will take 5 to 10 min to go out of the queue. When I look at the queue I can see 2 emails at the time being active and the rest of them the status is ready

My Questions are
1.      If one email contains 25 MB attachment and is being sent to multiple users, does exchange sees it as one email?
2.      Does anyone else have similar issue with sending the large  attachments
3.      Any suggestion of how we can get this attachments out from SAP without building up the Exchange queue and stopping the normal emails to be stack in the queue

1.      If one email contains 25 MB attachment and is being sent to multiple users, does exchange sees it as one email?

Ans: Yes it get counted as single if going for external recipient.

2.      Does anyone else have similar issue with sending the large  attachments

Ans: It totally depends on bandwidth between your HUB and next gateway which is sending mail to internal/external user. If you have single site infra and your HUB is sending mails to Edge/gateway which is connected Locally, so I would request you to check utilization and ping latency or any failure in ping between hops. In case mail is stuck on Edge server and taking time to pass on internet then check internet bandwidth utilization.

3.      Any suggestion of how we can get this attachments out from SAP without building up the Exchange queue and stopping the normal emails to be stack in the queue

Ans: Same as answered in 2nd question, check bandwidth.

Hi Amit, Thank you for the responds,
Our Smart host is in the cloud. We have 10Mb download with 8 MB upload , I even disabled Virus and spyware protection and is still the same. I tested 22 MB email and took 7 min to go out of the Queue.

ping latency between the exchange server and the smart host is 190ms.

Any other ideas ?

Thank you

Check if any RTO in long ping between Exchange server and smart host.

Also check bandwidth utilization at the time of sending mail with large attachment, hope you have given a dedicated link to connect your cloud directly on your Exchange server. If it is shared it can also create issue.

See there is not much you can check from Exchange server neither this issue is at Exchange server end.

This is totally depends on connectivity between Smart host and Exchange server.

Only having good bandwidth does not help in network, latency also matters while downloading/uploading.

See when you ping so it send chunks of 32 bytes with 190 ms, when you send large chunk then ms can be increased.

try ping -l 65000 -t <smarthostip>.

Above command will ping 65 KBs in one go see what latency you can see. It may help you to understand.

Hi Amit Kumar Goyal,

By doing ping -l 65000 -t <smarthostip>, I get Request timeout , should I be worried or could this be that the  PoD command  is blocked.

Thank you
