How can I better troubleshoot why Spotify won't play sound?

At the moment, my laptop plays sound, except through Spotify.  I've tried:
- using different headphones
- using the laptop speakers
- uninstalling and reinstalling Spotify
- checking the Spotify is muted
- checking the computer volume isn't muted
- verifying that my headphones aren't disabled in sound properties
- checking that it isn't muted as an application in sound mixer

I'm stumped!  OS is Windows 8.  Please help!

right click on the volume control in the system tray and select mixer see if spotify is muted or the volume is set to a low level
Also try a different user profile.

Thanks for your answers - Spotify isn't included in the mixer options and nothing is muted.  I don't have a different user profile to try unfortunately (it's a work laptop).
