volume shadow "restore previous versions"

Is there a specific policy setting on windows server 2008 R2, that defines how long "restore previous versions" option (which i beleive is linked to shadow copy) will go back for. Ours seem to default to 1 week, but I wanted something definitive and to see where this would be set.

I think there is a 64 copy limit - although this can be edited using the MaxShadowCopies registry key up to 512 per volume i think

so there should be 64 previous versions of the file/folder available?

There is a limit of 64 shadow copies per volume that can be stored. When this limit is reached, the oldest shadow copy will be deleted and cannot be retrieved.

Don't forget that you need the available free hard drive space and the space to hold this allocated for shadow copies (under system protection)

Im somewhat confused, as our H drives are setup for offline working / sync centre, so where is it pulling the shadow copies from, the local HDD or the server to which the offline files are synched?

Shadow copies use Volume Shadow Copy Service.. use vssadmin to set where the copies are stored
