Username format for Domino LDAP

I'm trying to write program in Perl to connect via LDAP to a Domino server. I can make the connection but when I try to authenticate I get:

"The wrong password was supplied or the SASL credentials could not be processed"

However, I know the password is right so I'm assuming Domino doesn't recognize the username. What is the proper LDAP username format for a Notes/Domino server? I've tried

John Doe
cn=John Doe/o=Domain

Any ideas how to find out?

There are 2 passwords for a Domino user that can be different: the Notes password and the Internet password; The Notes password is used to open the id-file in Notes, the Internet password for all other purposes e.g. http, smtp, pop, and imap. I assume ldap is also one of them. The Internet password can be found in the user's Person document in the Domino Directory (Name & Address Book): names.nsf
