mysql statement

I have 2 tables one called invoices and one called invoice payments.

I am looping through invoices from invoices table, what I would like to do is not show the invoices that are paid

both tables have "invoice_number" AS KEY

Sample data and expected result would assist answering this accurately.
Right now we would be guessing.

Here is one such guess:

left outer join payments p on i.invoice_number = p.invoice_number
where p.invoice_number IS NULL
