Window 2003 to Window 2008 in place upgrade

Is there any prerequisite check (say current memory, hdd, etc) on existing Window 2003 to ensure it can upgrade to Window 2008 ?

The current Window 2003 is a x32 platform and I need to upgrade it to Window 2008 x32. The server is a normal workgroup. Can I simply use Window 2003 backup to restore the OS in case of any problem ?

Any thing do I need to collect it in advance before the in-place upgrade ?

Tks

It is possible to upgrade from Windows 2003 32-bit to Windows 2008 32 bit, bit NOT to Windows 2008 R2 as that is 64 bit only.
You will need plenty of disk space on C: drive for the upgrade, approx 40GB total.
Make sure you have SP1 or SP2 installed.
A backup is recommended, which can be restored in case something goes wrong.
Have a 2nd separate backup for documents etc.

Yes, I will upgrade it to Window 2008 32bit.

Does Microsoft has any software to run the prerequisite check first ?

There is a software package called Microsoft Assessment and Planning Tool which can be used to inventory a server and prepare readiness reports before you do the upgrade.
