Dell iDRAC 6 and 7

Guys,

The company I am working for has Dell r710/720
iDRAC7 v1.6
iDRAC6 v1.98
They have already upgraded the firmware but it seems the iDRACs still seem to fall off the network?

I cant ping any of them at the minute
First point of call is to use the i button and reset it, but surely there must be a better way to stop i from happening in the first place ?

What is the best way to upgrade the firmware, esp if I cant remote login to them? I am a HP guy, never really worked with Dell!

Is there an ISO I can download and boot the server from ( They are esxi hosts) and then just go through an update? Like HPs smart Start?

all advice greatly appreciated!

Hi,
I think that could help you at least a little :

You can enter idrac pressing CTRL+E at server POST (Power on self test) when prompted.

There is a DELL SUU firmware DVD rom, you can boot from which will update all the firmware components of a R710 and R720.

I often find that DRACs drop pings now and then. No other devices on my network do so I live with it as a "feature". They do work when I need to use them via the web interface though.

Its 9gig, is there a way of burning it to a 4.5gb dvd? otherwise I will need a dual layer burner!

The iDRAC just becomes unpingable! The guys have said a server reboot is the only way to get it back up and running. Surely using he 'i' buton on the front will do a soft reset of the iDRAC?
Robin CMSenior Security and Infrastructure EngineerCommented:
The "i" button has to be pushed for >15 secs to reset the iDRAC. You can also try talking to the iDRAC using the racadm utility, which includes a command "racreset" which will let you reset the iDRAC if it isn't too broken...!

if the iDRAC is in shared mode would this cause an issue?
Robin CMSenior Security and Infrastructure EngineerCommented:
Personally I wouldn't use it in shared mode, especially in an ESXi host.
Mr TorturSystem EngineerCommented:
Hi,
same here, I would not recommend shared mode, as I had a big issue one time with that and also it was not Dell but Ibm xserver, I try to avoid using it everywhere.
