ESXi 6.0 and HP trunking

Hi Experts,

I have to setup my ESXi 6.0 for the management nics and the vmTraffic (data) nics.
As I remember the nics for the VM traffic must be configured as trunks.
Can you show me the config for a HP Procurve switch ?
What kind of trunk I have to use ?

What model HP Switch?
Mr TorturSystem EngineerCommented:
Hi,
I think it is LACP.
It is not that the nics for vm traffic MUST be configured as trunk, it is more that you will better use your all bandwidth, because if you do nothing each vm will use one vmnic at a time. But this is a configuration choice.
Eprs_AdminSystem ArchitectAuthor Commented:
This is not LACP

Loadbalancing and so on I can configure on the host.

LACP is for NIC teaming but here I need a trunk

Are you using Standard switches or Distributed Switches?

If you are using Standard switches, the trunks is NOT LACP, it's not supported on Standard Switches.

So a standard HP trunk on the physical switch, but as follows:-

conf
trunk 1-4 Trk1 Trunk

HP calls it a static port channel

and then

Route based on IP HASH
Link Status Only
Notify Switches Yes
Rolling Failover No

Thanks Andrew, amazing.
This is what I wanted.
Yes I use standard switches.
Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
make sure you test this....we've seen some switch firmwares with ESXi, behave weirdly!
Eprs_AdminSystem ArchitectAuthor Commented:
Hi Andrew,

one more question, the vm traffic is not yet working.
Do I have to enter also IPs on the esxi config ?
Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
VM traffic "flows through the vSwitch" to the VM endpoints.

No IP configuration required on ESXi.
Eprs_AdminSystem ArchitectAuthor Commented:
ok mistake by me just management is configured on esxi
Eprs_AdminSystem ArchitectAuthor Commented:
But for some reason I have no connection to my DC
Eprs_AdminSystem ArchitectAuthor Commented:
I have exactly this settings:

SW03:
trunk 3-4 trk3 trunk

SW04:
trunk 13-14 trk3 trunk

vSwitch:
Route based on IP HASH
Link Status Only
Notify Switches Yes
Rolling Failover No
Eprs_AdminSystem ArchitectAuthor Commented:
...is maybe spanning-tree a problem ?
Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
make sure, the vSwitch settings are correct all the way through the switch
Eprs_AdminSystem ArchitectAuthor Commented:
I checked it twice
not working yet
Eprs_AdminSystem ArchitectAuthor Commented:
is there maybe an workaround to test something ?
Eprs_AdminSystem ArchitectAuthor Commented:
the same group name of the trunk is no problem right ?

TRK3 for all trunk ports
Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
depends on your switch arrangement, and switch type, and whether in stacks, lags etc
Eprs_AdminSystem ArchitectAuthor Commented:
when I change to LACP then it works.

my switches are in a HP stack, one is commander the rest are members.

SW03 is Procurve 2810-24
SW04 is Procurve 2810-48

Any ideas why its working with LACP ?
Mr TorturSystem EngineerCommented:
Hi,
I did not know that LACP was not supported on standard switches.
But I did it several times and it worked, with HP or Cisco switches, and also I do not generally recommend to have unsupported configuration, I see that here again, in your case, it works.
So 0 points for my unsupported but working suggestion seems pretty unfair, for the moment. Except if somebody find anything else, supported and working.
No big deal but I am defending my point of vue.
