Unable to copy down formula in excel

I have the following formula:

=LEFT(B2,FIND(" ",B2,1)-1)

WIth other formulas I create, I am able to drag the formula down the column with the plus at the lower left of the cell, and the B2 changes to B3, B4, etc.

However, this formula does not do this.

Suggestions are appreciated.

I don't see any problem in the formula and you should be able to drag it as well..

Other way to do this is copy the formula... Select your cells where you want to paste and then do ctrl+v it will autofill the number of rows with your formula too..

Unfortunately, this is not happening, I have tried both ways - dragging and copying.

I think the problem is not with the formula but the way you might be dragging it. So try putting the same formula in the cells where are you able to do drag other formulas and try it out and if still have an issue attach your xls and I will help you out.

Can you post your sample file so that i can have a look..
Kanti PrasadCommented:

If you cannot copy or drag then it is to do with those cells being protected. Check if those cells are protected and unprotect them.

Go to Review tab on top, high light the formula cell and see if it has select locked cells and select unlocked cells ticked. If not just select both of them and that should do

Please find a sample attached - I tried the review tab and could not find an issue. The first names have been changed for identity.

I went into your file and i was able to drag it without any problem..couple of things...

Click on circle on top or file depending upon your excel version and go to options-->Advance and check have you selected the option of enable fill handle and cell drag and drop..

if your issue is formula doesn't get updated post drag and drop then go to formulas-->calculation options and check whether its on automatic..

If this doesnt work for you then can you post a screenshot of how your screen looks like when you go to the right hand bottom corner to drag it as i didn't found any issue in your file..

And alternatively like i said you can copy paste the formulas as that will works seamlessly..
