Time estimated to restore Window 2003

Window backup take 5 hrs for full system backup (around 38Gb) data in total.

What's the reasonable estimated time for

1. restore the window backup. Can I estimate it as 5 x 1.5 hrs ?
2. Time to rebuild the Window OS, 2 - 3 hr (basic install + patching)

Thanks

1. normally restore works at least as fast as backup
2. Rebuild is not an easy thing to estimated unless you have a clean plan of what you need to install and you have everything gathered in front of you...Also there is always something missed from Windows updates to registry entries....

Fast doesn't always mean is the best, sometimes we just need to have sufficient time for data/server restoration, which must be agreed with various of stakeholders.

You need to explain to your stakeholders the difference between urgency and stability of the system. Personally think that a minimum of 2 to 3 days is a good suggestion for a server restoration, but not yet considering other aspects and dependencies of the server, which may involve other testings (SIT, UAT, etc) that simply prolong the whole restoration process.

5 Hours for 38GB is damned long. Where are you imaging this system to? To USB1.1?
Usually backup of 38GB should take about 20min and the same for restore. In case you do backup to USB2.0 or network or internal drive.
Are you using NTBackup? Get a third party backup tool such as Paragon Hard Disk Manager Basic or StorageCraft Shadow Protect and they will do the backup and restore within 30 min.

difficult to give an estimate because of a number of variables...
how the restore is done from (usb, ethernet, etc.)
speed and raid level of the local disks (big difference between 15k sas in raid 10 and raid 5 sata)
if you provided more details on the environment and tools you are using, it would help in providing a more closer estimate
