TCHAR with QT

Hello,

I need to give a external DLL some file information. The DLL work with TCHAR.

as sample:
file.lpszFileName;  //const TCHAR* lpszSourceFilePath;

How to fill this with text? Like
file.lpszFileName=tr("test.txt");   //<--do not work
file.lpszFileName=QString("testx.txt);   //<--do not work

I use Unicode in my app. Any idea how to deal with this external DLL in QT?

yes, but _T is a windows thing and I read it will not work on Linux and Mac

As long as you are includeing 'tchar.h', it will ;o)

To elaborate: When compiling as UNICODE, this macro will just prepend a 'L' to the string literal marking it as UNICODE. That works on all platforms.

tchar.h is a windows header. it makes that windows api and ms class libraries like mfc can switch from char type and ANSI character set to wchar_t and UTF16 (wrongly named as UNICODE by MS) by simply defining the macro UNICODE in the project settings. the switch only works if you only use TCHAR (and other T types like LPCTSTR) together with macros like _T (as mentioned by jkr) and also use appropriate runtime functions like tcscpy.

for QT you would use QString which is a string class also based on UTF16 wide characters. so, it fits good to 'T' code with the UNICODE macro defined since the TCHAR then is wchar_t type what is the same character type as the QString is based on. however, you couldn't switch back to char type and it also doesn't make much sense to use the tchar.h which came with visual studio or windows sdk since it is a proprietary header that doesn't compile at other platforms or non-ms compiler environments. for example the #pragma once won't compile and tchar.h includes crtdefs.h which includes vadef.h and sal.h and so on (see header below).

so i would recommend to replace all occurences of TCHAR by wchar_t, all LPCTSTR, LPTSTR, ... by const wchar_t*, wchar_t*, ..., all _T("some text") by L"some text", and so on. even big source code could be ported within hours to compile since it doesn't require any analysis. alternatively you create a mytchar.h where you add typedef or #define statements to turn the T-stuff to wchar_t type.

that is much better than to trying to get the original tchar header compiled in a non-ms environment.
