how to free RAM of notebook?

I have a notebook lenovo s20-30 running windows 8 64bit with 4GB RAM, however find the windows use around 35% RAM after windows startup (without running additional program). How to mininize the RAM usage for the windows startup?

Hi Litmic,

You could start by running msconfig and disabling any services that are not required, and under the startup tab, remove any applications you do not want running when you startup.

Other than that, if its a clean build, I think you are pretty much stuck with how much windows uses for the system.

Given the fact that memory prices have dropped recently i guess it is a good time to upgrade to 8gb

As Guy said already, you should check with msconfig, may there will be some running Tools from Lenovo which you can disable or uninstall. You also can check which non Windows process running.

if you want to install win10 later, I recommand upgrade your memory to 8 GB.

Hi Gents, you can't upgrade the memory on this laptop... its integrated RAM....

First of all you need to know what is using this memory. Right click on task pane and select there - Task Manager.
Press on Processes Tab and see which app and service is taking most the RAM. It could be that you have too many processes running which are normally not used. And disabling them from autostart will give you enough RAM back. But if they are system processes then you have to live with it.

Lenovo usually has default software running in the background, like backup etc. You can disable those (via msconfig as has been mentioned already), or if you don't need them, uninstall them via the control panel, Programs and Features.

Also, many PC manufacturers include crappy trial versions of antivirus utilities, like Symantec (norton), which use a lot of resources and are otherwise not really any good anyway. Also remove that and replace with a good product. If you are using the PC for personal use, then I can really recommend the free version of Panda Antivirus, which uses very little in resources and still is very good. If you are using the PC in a business, then you need the paid for version. When installing it make sure you don't install the extra stuff like addon bars or firewall etc., your Windows firewall is already good enough.

As has already been mentioned you can probably upgrade the RAM. I have only seen a very few very cheap netbooks that have the RAM soldered on. All others allow you to replace the included RAM with larger modules. But depending on what you use the PC for, that probably really isn't necessary. 4GB is enough most of the time also for Windows 10. Besides, it is likely that you will have to remove the current RAM and replace it with the new module, as you probably don't have any free slots. That would result in you having surplus RAM.

Your memory usage is 1.3Gb  and for Windows 8 that is already very efficient.  Remove Anti Virus, Power Management, All Updating Services and other services and you can reduce memory used.

WHY?  You have 2.7GB of memory for programs and that is completely adequate. You have enough memory and your page file will be used in the odd occasion that more is needed.
