FM - Efficient Method of Sorting Portals Yet?

Boss wants me to sort a portal and currently in FM 12 and lower it seems the only way to do that is to duplicate the portal and place it on different Tab layouts.  However, this is intensive to maintain.  One change and you have to change it on, for example, 8 different portals.  Does anyone know of a different method or has the latest FM versions allowed for dynamic sorting?

One simple approach is to setup a global field for selecting the sort order and a calculation field that contains the sort field value that is determined by the selected value in the global field. The set the portal to sort on the value in the calculation field.

This works fine as long as you don't have a large number of records in the portal. Because the calculation references a global field, it is not indexed and this may slow down performance if you are sorting hundreds or thousands of records in the portal.

It worked, though I had to add a script that included Commit Record and Flush Cache.  Just created a global field and then another Calc field with a Case statement listing the selections I created in a value list and drop down field for the global field.  And, I am limited to sorting in only one direction at this point.
