hp ML370 g6,

DISK FLASHING AMBER, DIAGNOSTIC SAYS PREDICTIVE FAILURE.  Everything I read says no problem with hot swap if disk has failed (continuous red light), but I do not see anything regarding hot swapping a disk showing eminent failure. Should I wait till disk fails, or will proceed with swap?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

We have both HP and DELL servers.  What RAID configuration is it?  If 5 or higher just replace it while the machine is on, it will rebuild automatically.  You don't have to wait until it fail.

doesn't matter the raid level; it will still rebuild
i had a G6 recently that had a predictive failure in a raid 1; swapped the drive and it rebuilt
Don't wait until it fails. Replace the disk immediately..

Check the ADU report for "read errors hard" on the other disks and if none of them have this at anything but 0 then go ahead and swap it.

For example if the stats for one of the disks other than the one you're replacing show like this then it may be backup/restore time. It's only 500 bad reads since it was made but if one comes up during rebuild you'll have a punctured stripe.
