Copy and Paste feature is grayed out on a number of network users

I have a network that uses sbs 2011 and sophos control center and a number of users are struggling to copy and paste as it's grayed out, i find it strange that its doing it on a number of computers on the same network and not an isolated incident.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Is this in a particular application? e.g. Excel, or just generally, including in Windows Explorer, notepad, etc.?
Daniel ForresterDirectorAuthor Commented:

Check and see if the rdpclip.exe process is running. If it is, kill it and restart it.
Robin CMSenior Security and Infrastructure EngineerCommented:
You could also try this utility to see if anything has locked the clipboard http://windowsxp.mvps.org/temp/GetOpenClipboardWindow.zip
(there are reports of it fixing the clipboard just by being run too...)

Neither of these solutions worked, anymore ideas?

What happened when you ran the GetOpenClipboardWindow exe?

From a command prompt try the following:
echo hello | clip
and see if the option to paste is available in Notepad, you should get the word "hello" pasted.
Robin CMSenior Security and Infrastructure EngineerCommented:
From an administrator command prompt do:
sfc /scannow

Have you or anyone else installed any "RAM optimiser" or "registry cleaner" software on the affected machines?
What OS are those PCs running?
Daniel ForresterDirectorAuthor Commented:
That worked, however if i try and copy a desktop or local file and then paste it the paste is grayed out.
Daniel ForresterDirectorAuthor Commented:
No the network is very locked down, all windows 7
Robin CMSenior Security and Infrastructure EngineerCommented:
Run msconfig on the PCs and look in the startup tab for anything non-standard or that you didn't put there, or that is only present on the affected PCs and not the ones that are working ok.

Is the clipboard unavailable for all users who log on tho the affected PCs or only some? How about if you log on as the local administrator account on the PC (not the/a domain administrator)?
Robin CMSenior Security and Infrastructure EngineerCommented:
Do you have Notepad++ installed on the PCs?
Robin CMSenior Security and Infrastructure EngineerCommented:
There's a few other things I've not mentioned here too: http://www.ctimls.com/Support/KB/Error%20Fixes/Fix_Clipboard_Issues.htm
Robin CMSenior Security and Infrastructure EngineerCommented:
Have you configured any Rights Management stuff?
Daniel ForresterDirectorAuthor Commented:
let me go through a few of those suggestions from the document you sent, cheers.
Robin CMSenior Security and Infrastructure EngineerCommented:
I suspect this isn't the case, but also just check that there is a reasonable amount of available RAM on the PCs. Apparently if the RAM is very full it can affect the clipboard.
We've proved that the clipboard does work by using the redirect to "clip" from the command prompt, but that was only putting a very small amount of data onto it.

none of these suggestions worked, any ideas?
