How to prevent the black screen and cursor syndrome - windows 7

i have several locations that have an issue when the computers login (automatic profile login). it hangs at a black screen with only the cursor available.  I have found the only work around to be hitting control + alt + delete and then logging off and then logging back on as that user.

How can this be eliminated ?

Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.
