Prepping storage, adding additional storage

We are adding a powervault md1200 to our setup as additional storage. We have a PV MD3220 in use current and it will connect the other  in Unified mode. To save some time is it possible to connect the md1200 to a vacant system and prep it first? (firmware updates, raid setup)

My second question, after it is in place do we have to run software on a separate system or can we use the existing storage manager to manage both?

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

The MD3220 will automatically update the enclosure EMM firmware when you connect it. RAID setup can't be done as there is no RAID controller in the MD12xx, the RAID is setup using MDSM. You don't manage the MD12xx, it's managed by the MD3220.

You can even hot add the additional disk enclosure, see http://www.experts-exchange.com/Hardware/Servers/Q_27998707.html
