How to delete the winsxs folder in windows 2008 standard

Need to free up space.  Running windows 2008 standard, not R2.  I cannot obviously apply the hotfix for R2 to clean up the folder.  Any other options?

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You should NOT delete this folder at all. I think Disk Cleanup will not reduce WinSxs on this version of server. So you need to find other places to save or add disk.

Other places to save:  (1) reduce Page file usage and (2) run Disk Cleanup to remove temporary files. Both of the these actions may help.

Try the free version of CCLEANER. I have installed on servers as well as workstation to free space.  It helps me keep the machines "tidy".
You should not delete the WINSXS folder but if you check out the link below, you'll find instructions on how to clean up the WINSXS Directory instead.

That link is for R2 and the server above is not R2, so I don't know how well it applies. Disk Cleanup on the server above will not clean up WinSxs.
