Safe & easy ways to migrate Whatsapp messages/contents fr iPhone5 to iPhone6

I heard from iPhone5 (iOS 7.x) to iPhone6 (iOS 8.x) there's  a limitation/caveat but the source
I heard from is not sure what's the limitation/caveat

What's the easiest/safe ways to migrate over while still retaining the old messages/contents
in the old iPhone5?  I may have a limited amount of iCloud as the iPhone5 has about 27GB
of Whatsapp messages/contents.

The new iPhone6  my kid just got has 128GB capacity.

The magic word for you is "Backup", "Backup", Backup".  And then in case you did not get it "Backup". :-)

Very basically, you are going to plug in your iphone 5 to itunes and back it up.  Then plug in your iphone 6 and use that back up.  There are literaly thousands of tutorials and you tube videos on this. I will give you the apple one for the back up to either iTunes or iCloud. I personally prefer to do it with iTunes.

How to back up your device.

Then the restore

How to restore your device from a back up.

I am not sure of the limitation or caveat but as far as WhatsApp is concerned.  On the iphone 5 make sure you are on the latest version of WhatsApp.  Then if you back up and restore you are not actually doing any update to WhatsApp, it will be exactly the same version.

Also if you do the back up and then restore at the same time, if it goes wrong you still have everything on the iphone 5 anyway so you can do it again or write back here.

Just found the above past postings: learnt that we can backup everything except Whatsapp & SMS messages from
iPhone to iTunes, is that correct or it's a misunderstanding on my part?

Or on top of doing restore to the new iPhone6, we need an additional method of restoring the Whatsapp &
SMS messages/contents?

I think you should use the Backup/Restore process for your iPhone. Back up the old iPhone and Restore to the new iPhone. If your iCloud account is not big enough, you may need to upgrade to complete the process.

Connect to your network via wifi
In iOS 8 or later, tap Settings > iCloud > Backup
In iOS 7 or earlier, tap Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup
Make sure that iCloud Backup is turned on
Tap Back Up Now
Stay connected to your Wi-Fi network until the process completes

Make sure the backup finished by tapping Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage, and then select your device. The backup you just made should appear in the details with the time and backup size.

When you restore an iPhone, it needs to be a clean install. If you restore an existing phone, it will erase all the previous contents. Make sure your new phone can be wiped before the restore.

Turn on your device. You should see a Hello screen.
Follow steps in the splash screen for iOS Setup Assistant
Join a Wi-Fi network and follow steps until you see the Set Up Device screen
Tap Restore from an iCloud Backup
Next, sign in to iCloud
Choose a backup
After you select a backup, the transfer starts to restore the phone

Stay connected to wifi. If you disconnect from wifi before the process completes, the restore process will stop until you reconnect to wifi. Be patient; it takes time. This is especially true if your backup is large.

Or on top of restore from iTunes, I'll still need to do the above to activate Whatsapp on
the new iPhone 6?

Don't plan to use iCloud due to its capacity limitation

You could also backup to iTunes and restore from iTunes...more messy, but would work.
That is from a 4S to 6.  I have personally done 2 backup and restore from 5 to 6 and had no problems.

My guess on why 4S to 6 was an issue is because the actually WhatsApp app that is installed on the 4S could not be used on the 6.  This is why I said in my post to make sure on the 5 that your WhatsApp app is updated to the newest version.  In thinking make sure that your 5 is also on the latest iOS version as well. If it is on an old iOS version then Whats App will not be able to be updated either.

I've just taken a "Backup Now" from Manually Backup & Restore menu of the iPhone5S to iTunes & replied
Yes to "Backup the Apps" & "Do you want to transfer your Purchases to iTunes Library":

Then I plug in the new iPhone6 & do "Restore Backup" & it completed the restore.

However, after restore & booting up, the iPhone6 did not have 3 things:
a) the various apps of the old iPhone5S
b) songs (ie the mp3 files)
c) the Whatsapp messages/contents

What's found on the new iPhone6 are: Contact, SMS messages & photos only.

What did I miss?  I did not "Authorize this Computer" but I'm now retaking the
backup, this time with "Authorize this Computer"

Anyone has any idea how I can move the Apps, mp3 songs & Whatsapp messages/contents over?
Need to do this quite urgently

Dont want to pay to upgrade iCloud to 30GB
Did you follow step 5 fully in my linked Tutorial from Apple?

Click restore and wait for the process to finish. Your device will restart and then sync with your computer. Stay connected until the sync finishes.
sunhuxAuthor Commented:
Ok, just realized after restore, need to let iTunes "sync" which will install the apps to the new
iPhone6.  The Whatsapp & SMS had gone over to the new iPhone 6.

What's missing are the mp4 songs: have to sync the music from iPhone5S to my kid's
Macbook & then use the Macbook to sync back to the iPhone 6
sunhuxAuthor Commented:
Then had to "verify" on the new iPhone6 to start using Whatsapp on the new iPhone6
which will then disable whatspp on the old iPhone 5

Yes. You can simply backup the old iPhone with iTunes on computer first and then restore the iPhone backup to a new iPhone.  As you probably know, restoring from backup would wipe your current data with those in the backup.  So this method could only be used if you have a very new target iPhone.

If you want to migrate whatsapp data only from one iphone to another without losing any current data on new iPhone, I recommend Backuptrans iPhone WhatsApp Transfer. I have it when I get my new iPhon 6 +  early this year.
