walking into a new office with only one 2003 domain controller, need to upgrade, any gotchas?

hi experts Im walking in to a new office on Monday and they have only one 2003 Domain controller. Need to upgrade. Im thinking adding a 2008 virtual server, and then decommissioning the 2003 box. Then adding a 2012 server. Any thing I need to watch out for so it doesn't blow up in my face ?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Why not jump straight to 2012R2 and bypass 2008 completely?

Sure thing.  I just did one of these.  One "gotcha' don't pre-create your new DC machine name.  Let it get created when you join the server to the domain.

There is a bug I ran into and am dealing with still with replication due to this.  Drove me nuts for hours.
