Check for special characters in text area

Hi,

I have a text area where I want to check for special characters and if they are present then show an alert.

Here is what I have but its not working.

Thanks

<script>
$(document).ready(function () {
$('.notSpecilChar').blur(function () {
    if (/^[a-zA-Z0-9- ]*$/.test(this.value) === false) {
        alert('You have entered illegal characterss. Please remove them and try again.');
    }
});
});

</script>

<textarea class="notSpecilChar"  id="txt_Message" name="txt_Message" rows="4" wrap="virtual" cols="42" maxlength="400"></textarea>

What are you expecting it to do that it doesn't do correctly?

Interesting.... For some reason on my machine the alert will come up on page refresh, but if you type anything in the text box and click out of it,  the alert will not  come up
