Backup Exec 2012 Back up to Disk Location Full

My organization has acquired a small company recently who's IT persona left. Right now there backups are fails because the B2D location is full. When I view backup sets I see nothing listed. Yet if I browse to the locating on the network I see *.bak files from one year ago. Can I delete the *.bak files without cause problems in Backup Exec?

Hi,

Yes, you can delete the older backup files in order to get some free space.

PS - You can set this in BackupExec itself, modify the existing job and set the overwrite period as 1 month or so. But you should delete the old bak file now to get some space.

Hope this helps.

I took a closer look at the *.bak files and they are only 2KB each.... I deleted them but the volume is still showing as full.. How can I see where all of the space is taken up.. I see two jobs running now but not sure how since space is so low
When I delete data from the back up to disk location Back Exec is now showing the volume as having free space now.
You can use WinDirStat to help see how disk space is used on the volume
Thanks but  an trying to understand why after deleting  100GB the Backed Exec console is not reflecting this

It's possible you didn't delete the sets "properly", i.e. you deleted the BKF files in Windows but it still shows in Backup Exec.

Maybe I am in the wrong spot in Backup Exec but  i am not finding any media sets.
Backup Exec looks in its logs for how much data is stored in a location. I've had this same situation. If you go into Backup Exec, click the Storage Tab and then click a drive (on the storage tab), it will show datasets (even if you physically deleted them.  Right click the drive and select Inventory and Catalog Now.  This tells Backup Exec to rediscover the datasets that are on the drive.

Sometimes Backup Exec takes longer than normal to update the drive info. If it is not updated within five minutes after the Catalog job completed, on the Menu at the top, go to Configuration & settings, Services, Restart All Services. Only do this if there are no backup or catalog jobs running.

Hope this helps!
I just do not understand how some backup are running it there is not free space?
If there is no free space on the backup drive, the job will fail or Backup Exec is searching through the drive and deleting logs that are expired.

I suggest changing the backup File size to 10 gig. This allows backup Exec to make fewer backup files that can go up to 10 gigs. It makes it easier to evaluate the backup drive and it's more efficient for Backup Exec's processing.

Here is a link showing how to make that change:
