Magento as industry internet resource portal?

I want to create a Vortal (vertical market portal) for an industry to include news feeds, forums, micro sites for trade publications etc eyc.  We looked at MS share point but it does not look extensive enough and also as it is designed more for someone promoting their own business rather than a resource that anyone can view, the cost looks huge.  I saw Magento and wondered if this would work for what I am trying to do and be cost effective or can you advise any other packages which have the pre built infrastructure to achieve my goals faster than building it all ourselves?  Any advice would be great.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Magento is a shopping cart so I don't recommend this for a portal.

I would recommend Joomla, Drupal or Wordpress they have a lot of extensions and great community so you will find all you need and they all have shopping cart  addons if you need to sell goods, service, membership...

Thank you for your post!

Magneto is a content management system as is Joomla and Wordpress and share point etc however these packages seem to be geared for building for ones own company needs rather than an industries needs.  I need to build a vortal.

I don't see any problem using these for your project as they can all be expanded for almost any kind of website.
Which feature do you think you won't have using these?

Feature wise I think it works but licensing may be an issue as its general portal rather than for my own company and also charging people to advertise on this portal may be an issue.

I understand, and of course you should read the license of each CMS to make sure.

But I don't think there is such limitation about charging for advertising or for membership for Joomla and Wordpress, and such extensions are available.

I'm not aware about Drupal license...

I know that Expression Engine CMS for example use to have this kind of limitation.

Other solution is to create you own CMS,  this can be a lot of work at the beginning.
The good thing is that  you will have less maintenance to do after, because OpenSource project often have security issues and request a lot of update every year. This could be a good reason to start your own CMS.

You can also use a framework like CodeIgniter...
