Wait with upgrading until your applications work under Windows 10. Install a testing environment with Windows 10 trial so you can test your applications before upgrading.

In an AD environment, and also if you are using Windows clients with volume licenses, the clients won't get updated automatically, as they don't qualify for the free upgrade. So you don't have to worry about these.

In an AD they don't qualify for a free upgrade? Sorry, I know that you don't mean it that way, but it's likely to be misunderstood.

If you have an OEM license that permits the free upgrade, it will not happen automatically. You have to reserve the update and even then it requires admin authority to install it.

As rindi notes, TEST first.  I upgraded an older Windows 7 machine yesterday and even though Windows 10 works, there are drivers no longer available for that old machine. Make sure all that you have will work in Windows 10 before any large scale upgrading.
