WAN and LAN Network monitoring tools

Hello, I am looking for network monitoring tools for LAN and WAN are there any good reliable tools that can help make sure things are up and running.  I don't want it to be overly complex.. simple and reliable, if such a thing exists.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

PRTG is pretty good, and you have up to 100 "sensors" (node ping, node smtp, node ssl, etc) free.  Notifications can be customized fairly well.  We use the <=500 sensor license here to monitor key systems at two sites.  Good tool.  There are others that are free, others that are paid, some that are easy to set up, others that will be suggested that are *nix.  You didn't mention what platform you have, so my first thought is to PRTG.

MRTG/Cacti is good, PRTG is good as well. You can find also other tools check Zabbix Munin and OpenNMS ...etc. Cacti is a brilliant software beside nagios and MRTG ..... to narrow down the problem. I use Cacti , MRTG and Nagios, to monitor network services and servers, average time Web pages,  up-time, availability for free. The combination Nagios + Cacti. Nagios is been used for Alarms and Cacti for Trending/Graphs.

The SolarWinds free tools collection has a several options for basic network monitoring.  These are lite applications and usually do not have a database backend or complex installation.

If you want something for free that runs as a service 24/7, look at Observium, Nagios, Zenoss, or Zabbix.  If you want a paid for product, look at the pricey SolarWinds NPM and NCM
