How can I figure out what's wrong with this upload code?

Here's my code:

$photo_target = "mp3/";
$photo_target = $photo_target . $_POST['contestant_id'].'.'.$photofile_ext;
$url = $_POST['contestant_id'].'.'.$photofile_ext;
if(!move_uploaded_file($_FILES['mp3_file']['tmp_name'], $photo_target)) {
header("Location: contestants_noupload.php?contestant_id=$the_contestant_id");
exit();
}

Open in new window

When I echo the $photo_target and the $url values, they're all good. The destination url ("mp3/") is sound. I've checked the permissions for the mp3 directory and they're at 777. Everything appears to be in good, working order, yet it doesn't upload.

How can I troubleshoot what's happening if everything that's obvious seems to be in place?

Bottom line: I'm missing something and I don't know what and I don't know what to look for beyond what I've already mentioned.

What do you think?

what does:
print_r($_FILES);

show?  Do you have the right enctype for your form?
<form method="post" enctype="multipart/form-data" ...>...</form>

Also try specifying the full path to the mp3 folder.  Assuming that the mp3 folder is in the same folder where you have the upload processing script, try:
$photo_target = getcwd()."/mp3/";
Loganathan NatarajanLAMP DeveloperCommented:
Check this variable? $photo_target  Make sure you got the id and construct proper naming.
Ray PaseurCommented:
Checking the contents of variables with var_dump() is almost always a good idea.  I see at least 7 variables that might need to be checked in the code snippet of this question.  But that aside, having a redirect with header() makes it almost certain that any errors will be harder to spot because as soon as your page has done its work - for good or not so good - your browser will be looking at a different resource on the server.  So you might want to take the redirect our until you've spotted the issues.

That said, this script shows the general design of how to upload a file.  The configuration variables are at the top before line 44.  HTH, ~Ray

Gentlemen!

When I do print_r($_FILES), I get this:

Array ( [mp3_file] => Array ( [name] => Good.mp3 [type] => [tmp_name] => => 1 [size] => 0 ) )

[tmp_name] stands out as a possible problem in that it's followed by . Is that a problem and, if so, how do I correct it?

The file is too big.  Increase the upload limit. Increase upload_max_filesize in php.ini

The error codes are listed at:
