Hello,

I am doing already created baseline host patching. The scan has been done and have to just remidiate it. The data center has 5 hosts. So should i put them on maintenance mode one by one or i can just remidiate it from update manager.

Hi,

You must put them into maintenance mode.

Power off all the virtual machines or VMotion them to a different ESX host.
Right-click the ESX host, select Enter Maintenance Mode.
In the Confirm Maintenance Mode window that opens, click Yes.
Right-click on the ESX host and select Remediate.
In the Remediate window, tick the Critical Host Patches box and the Non-Critical Host Patches box>>Click Next>>Choose which updates or patches to install and click Next and Finish.

Hope this helps.

Some updates require that a host enters maintenance mode before remediation.

So we generally, always put a host into maintenance mode, before patching, we can check, if all the VMs have been moved off safely, and all VMs which are OFF, are registered with different hosts before proceeding with updates.
