How to encrypt a windows 8.1 computer?

HI,

I have heard that Windows 8.1 is capable of using Bitlocker to encrypt my hard disk but I have noticed that Bitlocker doesn't come with my Windows version, are there any other encryption options?

Thanks in advance.

Which Windows 8.1 version do you have?

"BitLocker Drive Encryption and BitLocker To Go require a Professional or Enterprise edition of Windows 8, or 8.1 or 10, or the Ultimate version of Windows 7. However, the “core” version of Windows 8.1 includes a “Device Encryption” feature that works similarly."

you can always add the propack (add windows features in control panel) which will upgrade to 8.1 pro that includes bitlocker

The BitLocker Drive Encryption feature is available only in Windows 8.1 Pro and Windows 8.1 Enterprise editions. You may be able to use 3rd part or you can upgrade the Windows.

So you would need 3rd party products, there are even free ones. Tell us if your hard disk is GPT formatted or MBR formatted, so we could give you recommendation on what to use. You can find out using the command from http://blogs.technet.com/b/filecab/archive/2008/09/25/storage-tips-how-to-check-if-a-disk-is-a-gpt-disk.aspx

I know no freeware that can fully encrypt gpt systems. They can only encrypt gpt data partitions, not system partitions.
Payware would cost as much as upgrading to win8.1 pro, so you should consider the upgrade.
