Database backup

We are at present studying application aware backup solutions for database backups for a customer requirement. Can anybody suggest on how we do the costing for it when presenting a proposal to the end customer for example to provide a full initial db backup of oracle with RMAN and then followed by incremental db backup. What kind of costs do we need to factor in?

Thank you in advance

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Seems fairly straightforward:

- cost of Oracle database licenses (if not yet purchased)
- cost of enterprise grade backup software
- cost of backup hardware (e.g. tape system or perhaps SAN with snapshot & replication features)
- labor cost of DB admin managing this.

I agree with the first post.

Wanted to add the cost of additional disks if you want to do disk-to-disk-to-tape which is what I recommend.

If you are asking how to estimate your costs for the time to create the RMAN scripts, we cannot answer that.  It would be based specifically on how familiar you are with RMAN and the types of backups and recovery times specified in the Service Level Agreement.

If you have never touched RMAN, I can tell you it will take you quite a while in the documentation.  It isn't a nice point and click GUI.

You will need to decide on the frequency, type of incremental and if you want incrementally updated incrementals.
How many copies of archived redo logs to you keep around so they are on multiple tapes.
...there are many more decisions...

Thank you all for your help. Can you suggest what other tools are good for Oracle backups? Apart from RMAN

There are many backup software packages that 'can' backup Oracle but I wouldn't use them.

There really isn't an advantage unless you want a featureless/dumbed-down point and click GUI.
