I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I might not understood your question "display only the title here", butI modified the XSLT so now it outputs all the records in the table.
Check this out:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<xsl:stylesheet version="1.0"
xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform">
<xsl:template match="catalog">
  <html>
  <body>
    <h2>My CD Collection</h2>
    <table border="1">
      <tr bgcolor="#9acd32">
        <th>Title</th>
        <th>Artist</th>
      </tr>
      <xsl:apply-templates select="cd"/>
    </table>
  </body>
  </html>
</xsl:template>

<xsl:template match="cd">
  <tr>
    <td><xsl:value-of select="title"/></td>
    <td><xsl:value-of select="artist"/></td>
  </tr>
</xsl:template>

</xsl:stylesheet>

I assume you want the cd/title shown only.
I left the table construct.
zc2's suggestion is almost there, but given the discussions we had before, I would like to take the apply-templates mechanism one step further, by simply using apply-templates without a select and use empty templates to avoid node copying

Here is how it would look like then

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<xsl:stylesheet version="1.0"
    xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform">

    <xsl:strip-space elements="*"/>
    <xsl:output indent="yes"/>

    <xsl:template match="/catalog">
        <html>
            <body>
                <h2>My CD Collection</h2>
                <table border="1">
                    <tr bgcolor="#9acd32">
                        <th>Title</th>
                    </tr>
                    <xsl:apply-templates select="cd"/>
                </table>
            </body>
        </html>
    </xsl:template>
    <xsl:template match="cd">
        <tr>
            <xsl:apply-templates select="node()"/>
        </tr>
    </xsl:template>

    <xsl:template match="cd/title">
        <td>
            <xsl:apply-templates/>
        </td>
    </xsl:template>

    <xsl:template match="cd/*[not(self::title)]"/>

</xsl:stylesheet>
