"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Did you start the standby database?
Has it come up completely?

Log into the standby server and check the alert log.

As far as I know, you cannot query a physical standby if it is in managed recovery mode.  You would have to stop managed recovery and open the database read only.  Then once you are done with your queries, you restart managed recovery.

Something could have changed in recent versions that changes that, but last time I did it, that was the way it was done.

It depends on what Data Guard options they have.

Read-only access to a physical standby database for production workload offloading

Even if it is the 'classic', I think you would need to have the standby server properly licensed to start it up for things like 'reporting'.
