MySQL Replace db content

I have a MySQL database on a web server; I want to export the tables / content from another server & then load all that exported content into the existing database.

Don't I have to drop all the tables / content before I do a MySQL Import from the sql file of the exported database?

Or??

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I normally include the DROP (and CREATE) as part of the SQL file that I am importing.  Below is a simple example.
DROP TABLE IF EXISTS `searchalt`;
CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `searchalt` (
  `sid` int(11) NOT NULL auto_increment,
  `phrase` varchar(40) NOT NULL,
  `plink` varchar(128) NOT NULL,
  PRIMARY KEY  (`sid`)
) ENGINE=MyISAM  DEFAULT CHARSET=utf8 AUTO_INCREMENT=65 ;

Open in new window

This would be followed by the INSERTs that populate the table.  Check your SQL files in something like Notepad++ or PSPad to see if they have the DROP and CREATE statements for each table.  If they do , you do not need to do it separately.
