Site contents shift off page in IE

The text and images for the website shift to the right into the background.  Only happens in IE.  How do I fix without impacting how it sits on other browsers?

No, it's not so.  I'm sitting here looking at it in IE8, IE9, and IE11 on 3 different computers and it looks the same as it does in Firefox and Chrome.

That's weird Dave because i was at clients most of this morning and on her system, the text floated off page to the right.  I will contact her to make sure that is still an issue.  Geez this site has gremlins!

I have been unable to install IE10 on any of my computers.  It's not available even as a download.  Is she on Windows 7 or Vista?

Will find out!

She just called.  They have Window 7 Professional.

Dave BaldwinFixer of ProblemsCommented:
She should be running IE11 then.  It is the current version for Windows 7.

nsitedesignsAuthor Commented:
From what I can see, IE 11 is not compatible with Windows 7.

Dave BaldwinFixer of ProblemsCommented:
Then you're looking in the wrong place because I have IE11 on two Windows 7 computers.  I have IE9 on Windows Vista and IE8 on Windows XP.  I was trying to have one of each version but I was unable to get IE10 for any of my computers.

nsitedesignsAuthor Commented:
I will look some more.  I found a reputable site to give to client to download IE 11 and it said it is not compatible with Windows 7.

Ugh, I see now that it was looking at my mac and telling me that I cannot use it.  My mistake.

The ONLY place to download IE11 is from Microsoft.!!

jci - I think we will start with a new browser version since the version they are running is so old.  If the problem continues after the new version is installed, we will look at resetting factory specs.

One other thing... all versions of IE object to running 'Active Content' in a local file.  Firefox is much better for development.  You can always check it in IE once it's on the server and not subject to the local file restrictions.

Dave,

Do you mean IE would give us problems in Dreamweaver when we try to preview page prior to going live?
0
Dave BaldwinFixer of ProblemsCommented:
Yes, it might, if you have javascript or some kind of active content on the page.  It has nothing to do with Dreamweaver, it's a characteristic of IE since at least IE8.  And even IE doesn't really like spaces in file and page names.

I have web servers on almost all of my computers here.  I will preview HTML pages in Firefox directly from my editor but I use the web servers to view any kind of active content like javascript, PHP, or ASP.  When I view pages thru the web server, I get the behavior that you can expect on the hosting server.

Client upgraded to newer version of IE but still has concerns that site WAS working good a week ago but now it is not.  She has concerns about others that might be using older versions like herself.

Would you recommend a pop up window warning people to upgrade to newer version?  If so, what version is the lowest that the site still displays well on?

"Client upgraded to newer version of IE but still has concerns that site WAS working good a week ago but now it is not."
I am confused.  Is the centering problem now fixed?  What version of IE is being used?

Concerning a popup, Windows Update should be telling client that IE 11 is available for installation if an earlier version of IE is being used.

"Client upgraded to newer version of IE but still has concerns that site WAS working good a week ago but now it is not."  Was a System Restore tried?

Dave BaldwinFixer of ProblemsCommented:
I would not recommend a popup because we don't know what was causing the problem.  In addition, the page worked in IE8, IE9, and IE11 here as well as every other browser so it is not a matter of the 'lowest version' that works since versions lower than IE10 worked fine as far as I can tell.

Centering problem still exists when using IE 10.
When using IE 11, site appears good.

How can I fix it so site does not fly off page when using IE 10?

nsitedesignsAuthor Commented:
Good point.

So do you think there is something wrong in my css file?
0
Dave BaldwinFixer of ProblemsCommented:
No, I think there may be something wrong with IE10.  But I don't have a copy to be able to check it.  Maybe there's a reason Microsoft won' let you get a copy of IE10.  Note that the page works fine in every other browser.

nsitedesignsAuthor Commented:
The weird thing is that it worked fine about a week ago in IE10.  Client is worried others with IE 10 will view their site shifted off to one side.

Did you read my post  http:#a40924728   ?

However, you seem to have had a Compatibility problem and solved it by using IE11.  See the post to which I referred you earlier

Site was displaying fine a week ago in IE 10.  Now it does not.  Perhaps css can be modified?

Perhaps css can be modified?
Maybe... but your client is the only one that has IE10 and can test it at the moment.  Did you change the CSS a week ago?  Or did they?  You are checking IE10 on the live site and not thru Dreamweaver, correct?

Dave BaldwinFixer of ProblemsCommented:
Windows Update should be telling client that IE 11 is available
For what it's worth, Windows update on Windows 7 did Not tell me that IE11 was available, I went looking for IE10 to upgrade from IE8 because I had done a factory restore and IE8 is what originally came with Windows 7.  IE10 was not available anywhere I could find so I upgraded to IE11.

They are checking live site on internet, not DW.  I was with her when we noticed the problem.  yes, we did tweak CSS 1-2 weeks ago because the right sidebar ONLY was moving into the background.  Not sure if that fix would have impacted having the entire site shift off screen since I would have thought client would have told me there was a problem again.  But, you never know.  I will locate old version of css, put it live and see what happens.
