HP Pavilion TouchSmart 15 Keyboar Issue

I have a client that has a HP Pavilion TouchSmart 15-b129wm laptop that the keyboard is working properly.  The F1-F12 keys seem to work but nothing else.  I've updated all drivers and the BIOS and disabled the action keys mode from within the BIOS thinking the Fn key might be stuck on, but that didn't help.  I'm not sure if the keyboard is bad or not so I thought I'd ask here before purchasing a new one.  I did remove the keyboard to reset the ribbon cable for the keyboard.  I've checked keyboard settings and "ease of use" settings to see if something might be shutting or locking the keyboard down.

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Have you tried an external keyboard?

If that works then your problem boils down to laptop keyboard and connector cable.
nobusCommented:
you can test if the keyboard works if you boot from a live cd, like the Knoppix cd here :

Yes I have tried an external keyboard and it works properly.  I just figured if a keyboard went bad all the keys would not work.

I'll try testing it tomorrow (traveling today) using the Knoppix cd to see what it shows.

Thanks for the suggestions.

>>    I just figured if a keyboard went bad all the keys would not work.   <<  that's only 1 possibility; in most cases several keys, tied to the sam matrix line  do not work - while others are ok

Sorry for the delay.  I've been having issues with downloading Knoppix due to a slow internet connection.  I'm still trying and will let you know the outcome.

no problem

I was finally able to download Knoppix and will test the laptop today.  Thanks

I couldn't get the laptop to boot to the thumb drive at all.  I decided to refresh the laptop since it was acting up so much.  After the refresh was finished the keyboard started working, so that's good news.

I'm still have an issue with every time the laptop boots I always have to hit Esc to get past the System Information.  How can I stop that from happening?  Thanks again.
nobusCommented:
you mean it enters Bios?
did you set time and date correct?  if yes, maybe the bios battery is low - test it, it should have 3 V min; or replace it, it is a CR2032
french44Author Commented:
It's not the BIOS.  I've attached an image of what I get, every time.

nobusCommented:
it does look like a bios page to me
what happens when you hit the escape key?  is it "starting Windows" or directly in the OS ?
french44Author Commented:
When I hit Esc it continues to load Windows.  I'm resetting it to factory defaults now so I'll see if it shows it again when finished.
nobusCommented:
it looks like a wrong setting in the bios - check all settings, eg halt on errors etc
you can try changing a setting - and saving it - that often helps too
also see my comment about the bios above

Resetting the laptop to factory defaults eliminated the issue I was having.  Thanks for the assistance.
