New Domain Controller named incorrectly

I built a new server which is our domain controller and made it part of the domain. The problem is in error I named it  incorrectly

I did promote it as a PDC

I named it abd-01

when it should have been abc-01

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

It's reasonably easy to rename a Domain Controller using NETDOM or System Properties.

There is a Technet which outlines the exact steps to rename a domain controller. See below link.

The solutions might be slightly different based on the Windows version.

It is really as easy as renaming a domain workstation.

Just allow for enough time for domain replication to complete and for all sites and domain controllers to get the new info.

Will SzymkowskiSenior Solution ArchitectCommented:
The process is the same for all DC OS's. I would also suggest you follow the link I provided as it is a Microsoft based article.

if I use NETDOM do I use the full computer name

example ( from the control panel " System"

server-01. apple .local is the Full Computer name
server-01 is the computer name

apple.local  is the domain
Will SzymkowskiSenior Solution ArchitectCommented:
Follow the example below and it will work for you. I have added DC names to illustrate this.

1. Open cmd.exe (runas administrator)
2. Type: netdom computername dc01/add:dcnew01
3. type: netdom computername dc01/makeprimary:dcnew01
4. Restart the computer.
5. Open cmd.exe (runas administrator)
6. type: netdom computername dcnew01 /remove:dc01
