Can SQL 2005 and SQL 2012 live on the same server?

My organization has a tight budget. We have an SQL 2005 server for products that don't support higher versions. We have other products that require hire versions of SQL. Performance isn't an issue. We hope to buy one server instead of two, and my boss is adamant that SQL may not live on VMware/Hyper-V/Xen/etc.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

We run SQL on VMWare here, without issue.

To answer your question yes they can both live on the same server, but you can only have one default instance, the other will have to be a named instance.

Install SQL 2005 first, then install the higher version as another instance  ( ensure you are not overwriting the previous 2005instance )
