Server 2008 entry level admin

Hi EE,

I will be accepting a Sys admin Level 1 and I was wondering what is the best way to verify which servers do what function?? If I log on to  a server named DC1, how can I verify that it is a DC enabled server and the same with a Print server named PS1, how do I verify the features and such??

Thanks.

To start look in Server Manager. It will show you the roles/features. If you have the ability to ask a co-worker, ask them for specifies.

Mamatthewsbek have a good point and you can start from there.  You can start there for the basic MS roles like to see if a server is a print server, file server, terminal server, web server.

Other than that, up-to-date documentations are my best bet or ask someone who's knowledgeable of the environment.  It takes too long to figure out which server does what (custom software like accounting server, ERP server, etc.)

I don't know of any way (scanner tool) you can use to analyze this, especially in a big environment.  Take a university infrastructure for example.  You just can't know what each server fully does without proper, accurate and up-to-date documentations.

Hi L,
To know if server machine is the domain controller, simply go to the sever manager. All DC machin has ADDS,DNS installed.
For other services such as print server, file server etc, just expand the Roles or Features from the opened server manager, from there you can see all roles and features installed and not installed.
