vCenter Converter 6.0, Convert Linux LVM and Resize

Hi,

I have a couple  of Linux physical servers that I want to convert to VMs. The 2 ubuntu Linux OSes partitions are on LVMs and the LVMs are 1TBs each.

When converting I want to reduce the LVMs to about 50GBs as that's all the Linux VM needs. Will  VMware Converter do this for me safely? Can you select the option to resize the disk and make it smaller and will the resulting Linux OS boot and operate just as it used to?

Or do I need to convert the Linux OS, then afterwards boot the VM and reduce the LVM partitions using LVM utilities and then reduce the VMDK size (which I think can only be done with converter or command line utilities). I don't want to risk reducing the LVM before hand in case something happens with the Linux OS...

Thanks. Just wondering what the cleanest solution is to convert Linux to VM and reduce the size of the hard drive and not reduce the LVM before the conversion. Thanks!

Converter 6.0 will try to do this for you, if it cannot do this, you will have to do it manually.

If converter can do it, it will be done quickly, in one conversion and procedure.

OK, so converter "SHOULD" be able to do this if you select to reduce the size in the conversion wizard properties?

Have you done this before?

Yes, I written many EE Articles around the subject, extensively!

You will know if the option is supported as soon as you start the conversion, if it can resize it.

OK cool. I was just double checking because I've done it many a time with Windows, but just haven't done it with Linux yet. Thanks.
