Cloned Hard Drive does not have the Microsoft Office Product Key

I cloned my MacBook Pro V 10.10.1 using the Disk Utility.
The process seems to have completed successfully and I can boot the cloned hard drive.  However when I open Microsoft Office 2011 it wants me to enter a product Key.  I have no idea where that is at this point with very little chance of finding it

Why, if I cloned the drive does it not have the License on the new drive?  Shouldn't it be a complete copy of the old drive?
Would it make any difference if I used a third party program to clone the hard drive?

Anyone have any suggestions?

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

The bad news is that the MS Office product key is a bit of a complex animal.  MS keep the exact elements a secret but the license created using the original serial you entered and is encoded using identifiers from hardware components on your computer.  The problem is that these can include network card, wifi or other components.  Therefore if you change the computer or even replace some of these components the licence will be invalid and MS Office will not recognise it.  You cannot reverse engineer the license to work out what the original serial was - or at least I've never seen a successful post on how to do it.
There have been lots of posts on this here on EE and many other websites over the years .. the short and only 100% reliable solution, if you have not got the original serial from the original MS Office installer, is to go and talk to Microsoft as they are the only ones who can issue a serial number to you.

OK, thanks.  Not what I wanted to hear but at least I now know.  This is why getting products via a download is a bad idea for consumers.  At least before you could write the product key on the CD and both would be in the same place.

Usually when you download a product, they e-mail you the licence key and I make a habit of saving the e-mail in a folder that I keep for that purpose.
