How do I solve this css issue? Nothing seems to be working.

On this page:
as you can see from the screenshot, if you click on the dropdown arrow for the middle select tag, one of the text items extends beyond the limits of the dropdown: Screenshot with problem
I have tried various things in css (fixing width by pixels, auto or %; using word-warp:break-word) but nothing seems to work.

Could anyone please help?

You have a template issue.
I've seen this before.
This particular menu item exceeds the space you are setting for the select tag as a whole.

Look for this css tag in stylesheet.css line 126(?):
.event-heading .btn-group, .multiselect-container {
    width: 100% !important;

and work there.  try commenting out the width selector and see what that does for you.
