Lotus Domino 9.0 install on same pc with 8.5.3

Is it possible (and safe) to install Lotus Domino 9.x on same pc as 8.5.3 running windows 7 pro?  I would like to keep each separate and run each as their own instance.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

IMHO it is not safe to install different Notes versions (clients) or different Domino versions (servers), but if you plan to install only one of each, I assume the versions don't matter.

On my system, I also needed multiple clients, so what I did is I Installed virtual machine software (VirtualBox in my case, but VMWare would work just as well) and I installed a copy of my base system as a virtual machine. There I installed the second Notes client. You could do the same, but then for a Domino server.

That makes sense.  I may need info on setting up VMware on this laptop to ready for Lotus Domino installs as you mention.  Would you happen to know if instructions and available software for that could be found on Experts Exchange or would I need to check vendor website?  How much effort to accomplish all this you think?

EE has a VMWare zone, so you could ask the experts there. Do you have someone to help you, a systems administrator or so? Could be very important, because you have to install a duplicate system, with all administrative task that come with it e.g. Connecting to your network, etc.

Don't hesitate to ask more questions!

PS you might try to install Domino, it might work. Notes and Domino have separate installation folders and data folders, so they shouldn't bite each other.
PS2 VirtualBox is free...

I don't have anyone to help and it may be more than I feel comfortable with doing.  I will evaluate all my options and decide.

Which leads me to the question: what exactly do you intend to accomplish? We are talking about installing a Domino server next to a Notes client, aren't we? But why? What do you need the server for? Do you know how to install and operate a Domino server? It's not rocket science, but it might be a bumpy ride...

I would like to install 9.x Lotus Domino designer client on the same pc I have 8.5.3 designer client installed.  I don't need server at this time.  The reason of this is in order to continue studying for 8.5 certification exam while allowing myself to become more familiar with 9.x.

Ah, right, a 2nd client. Yes, that would qualify for a 2nd system, either real or virtual.

The most difficult thing of the virtual PC installation is that it requires the installation of a new O/S, with a proper licence. All the rest is peanuts, install VirtualBox and a bit of configuration.

I have a 2nd older laptop that I could use that could run 8.5 on its a bit slower but might be ok for what I need.  That would be the least course of resistance I suppose lol.

Indeed it would. :-)
