Discovery Meeting at new business

Good Morning Everyone,

does anyone have a basic questions that I should ask when I meet with a new business for the first time? They are running Windows Server 2003 and they want a quote for a new server, installed, they have 5 users. Does anyone have a guidelines with questions that I can use to discover their environment, what application they are running, so that after one session I can have a better understanding of what needs to be done, and all the component of their network ?

then I can certainly add or remove questions but at least I have a starting point.

Thank you

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Doesn't sound like a terribly complex environment.

Don't be afraid to ask questions.  Lots and lots of questions.  Tell 'em it's OK if they don't know the answers right away.

Ask whether it's a domain environment, whether any services run on the server that users access (E-mail, database, etc.).

Ask about backup.

Ask what applications they are using.

Ask about capacity.  Is it just a file server?  How much space do they need?

Talk about future proofing so that their investment is not obsolete quickly.

Talk about performance.  Do they require a certain number of disk operations?
