Try starting word in safe mode... will it open docx then?   Start in safe mode by holding down CTRL key while launching the shortcut

if so, might be some add-ins causing the problem.

Same result by opening in "Safe Mode"  Also I've tried Going into Trust Center, Trust Center Settings, Protected View & cleared all checks.  Also have performed a repair installation of entire suite.  Still getting this error.

are you able to save new files as docx and then open them immediately after?

start a new document
type =rand(20,30) and press enter
save the document and close
try to open the document.

This was apparently the cause of an update that to applied to my system.  This issue just began about 2 days ago right after updates were applied, so I did a system restore from 3 days ago issue is fixed until updates gets applied i assume.  No idea which update caused this issue.
