JavaScript: How to use regular expressions to format a phone number

Let's say I have a phone number like 8005551212 that came in from a database. I'd like to become (800) 555-1212 and display it on the screen.

Can someone please show me how to accomplish this using regular expressions in JavaScript?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Hi elepil;

the below code snippet should do what you want.

// Test Data
var phone = "8005551212";
// Regular Expression pattern
var pattern = /(\d{3})(\d{3})(\d{4})/;
// Reformat the 10 digit phone number
var phoneFormatted = phone.replace(pattern, "($1) $2-$3");

You know, I was doing it just the way you did, except I was using the '\' for the backreferences. Now I know it's the '$'.

Thanks for your help!
