Teach a man to fish

For training purposes (querying and stored procedures), I wish to download a free version of SQL Server to my personal computer.

Can someone please advice on whereabouts and what version?

Thanks so much

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You can download SQL Server Express 2014 for free at the following link:

It is a less featured version of SQL Server.

The next alternative would be SQL Server Developer edition which can be had for free if you have an MSDN license.  It has all the same functionality of the enterprise edition and a quick search turned one up for #60.

For a long time, Express version will be more than enough for your training. You can download trial version much later when you really need them.

For just querying and stored procs, Express edition will be fine.

If you want to practice in a professional environment -- including creating and scheduling jobs; using partitioned indexes; using DTA; SSIS -- you will need the Developer Edition.  Personally I'd recommend it anyway.  It's extremely inexpensive compared to what you can learn from it.

The last couple of version I purchased Developer edition on amazon.com for $50, and I use this on my dev box for demos and presentations.

If you're serious about your career then $50 is nothing.

SQL Express is the right choice, if you know how to install and manage a database.
If your need is to learn TSQL then try using SQLAzure which is quite cheaper. Or you can try Amazon AWS, which provides free tier usage for the new customers https://aws.amazon.com/free/https://aws.amazon.com/free/https://aws.amazon.com/free/.
