Teach a man to fish

For training purposes (querying and stored procedures), I wish to download a free version of SQL Server to my personal computer.

Can someone please advice on whereabouts and what version?

Thanks so much

For just querying and stored procs, Express edition will be fine.

If you want to practice in a professional environment -- including creating and scheduling jobs; using partitioned indexes; using DTA; SSIS -- you will need the Developer Edition.  Personally I'd recommend it anyway.  It's extremely inexpensive compared to what you can learn from it.
