Can two domains in the same forest be at different domain levels

Good afternoon,

We have a trust to our parent company who's domain level is at 2003. We do not know why they do not update tp 2008 or higher, but we would like to move our domain to 2008 R2.

In sites and services when you click on raise domain function level it shows 2008 and 2008 r2.

Can we update our domain function level to 2008 2r with no impact to the other domain?

hi yes they can. you have domain functional level and forrest functional level. To rasise the forrest functional level, all domains must be at the same level. however each domain can operate on its own separte level with no interruption. If all of your DC's are 2008 R2 then raise to that level

Be noted if you are upgrading your Domain and Forest function level to 2008/2008r2 then your domain will not support Windows 2003 DC OS. So please check if you have any machine running windows 2003

Else you can do it without any issue as far as your another company is not in child trust.
You cant actually update the functional level until all DC's are at the required level. For example if you raised the functional level to 2008 R2, all of your DC's would need to be at that level

All of our DC's at our office are 2008R2's it is hte other domain that is at the 2003 level along with the forest being at 2003.
You can upgrade the domain functional level not the forest.

I am trying to confirm any compatibility issues that may occur.  We have a domain trust with the other domain in the forest.

If we raise the domain function level for our domain to 2008r2, will it cause any issues between us and the domain that is staying at 2003 ?
no it won't it will function as intended, without causing any issues
